House Speaker Paul Ryan

Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives | July 12, 2018
Addressed the state of the economy and his "Better Off Now" agenda.

In his second visit to the Economic Club, House Speaker Paul Ryan unveiled his “Better Off Now” agenda, a follow-up to the Speaker’s “A Better Way” platform that he revealed in 2016 during his first visit to the Economic Club. Speaker Ryan credited the pro-growth tax and regulatory reform policies of “A Better Way” to spurring economic growth through such results as wage increases for over five million workers and relocation of businesses back to America. He told the audience that global competitiveness remains a priority for Congress, and emphatically stated his view that tariffs enacted by the President are not the solution to improving the country’s global standing. Speaker Ryan then joined Economic Club President David Rubenstein for a conversation-style interview, where he was asked about the upcoming midterm elections, as well as his post-retirement plans and the potential of running for President of the United States. When asked if he will consider running in the future, Speaker Ryan said, “Well, you never say never to things like that, but I’ve had plenty of opportunities to think about it, to look at it… I like myself too much.”
