The Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg

Mayor of the City of New York; Founder, Bloomberg LP | September 12, 2012
Urged political parties to focus on headcount in the workplace instead of headlines in the media.

The Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York and Founder of Bloomberg LP, delivered critical remarks aimed at both political parties for their failure to resolve the major problems confronting the United States in a speech at the Economic Club. In particular, the Mayor, a political independent, focused on the “paralysis” in Washington that he said “is standing in the way of a full recovery.” He blamed both parties for having “focused on generating headlines in the media, rather than generating headcount in the workplace.”

Mayor Bloomberg outlined steps he felt should be taken to resolve what he considered to be both short- and long-range economic challenges. He held up the progress that has been made in New York City since the 2008 financial collapse as an example of what can be achieved when these steps are followed. He said that New York has regained 200 percent of the jobs lost four years ago compared to 40 percent gained back across the United States.

The Mayor began his remarks with an acknowledgment of the tragedy that had occurred in Libya that morning. “The attack on the American consulate in Libya is just another tragic reminder that the freedoms that we cherish continue to come under attack by those who do not share our commitment to liberty,” he said. “I thought the President this morning struck exactly the right tone in his remarks, and clearly, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims.”
