scholarship program
The Economic Club of Washington, DC, presents individual scholarships of $5,000 each to 38 students of DC public and charter schools in a program designed to aid talented students in pursuing their dreams of higher education.
This is the fourth year that the Economic Club has granted scholarships through the David M. Rubenstein/Economic Club of Washington Scholarship Program. The program was endowed in the Club’s name by Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Carlyle Group. “The Economic Club always has maintained close ties with the Greater Washington community, focusing in particular on ways to advance the education of Washington’s young people,” according to Jeffrey Eisenach, Chairman of the Education Committee of the Economic Club of Washington. “David thought it was important to take that focus to a new level in helping high achieving local students realize their dreams of pursuing their education. That is why David so generously endowed a scholarship program that will award $190,000 every year to deserving DC public and charter school students.”
The David M. Rubenstein Scholarship program is further enhanced by a mentoring/coaching component in which Economic Club members meet with scholarship recipients to discuss the importance of higher education and various career paths the students might want to consider. Three of these Leadership Training Seminars were hosted by sponsoring Club members over the summer. Participating Club members were Kurt Haglund, Managing Director, Capital One; Stuart Solomon, Managing Director, Metro Washington of Accenture; and Richard Woods, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs, Jones Lang LaSalle. Solomon and Accenture also treated the scholarship recipients to a fun night out at a Washington Nationals baseball game.

fellowship awards
The Economic Club of Washington and the Consortium of the Universities of the Washington Metroplitan Area (CUWMA) are pleased to partner in the announcement of the annual Doctoral Research Fellowships. Two $10,000 stipends will be awarded to doctoral-level students from Consortium institutions to support independent research in areas of interest to The Economic Club of Washington. Areas of concentration could include economics, finance, international trade or business. These awards are presented in the Spring of each year.
In 2009, the Doctoral Research Fellowship Program was renamed the Vernon E. Jordan Fellowship Program in honor of the Economic Club's immediate past president.
"During his tenure as president of the Economic Club, Vernon Jordan significantly increased the Club's value as a critical forum for the exploration of the most important economic and financial issues of the day," David Rubenstein, President of the Economic Club, said. "Simultaneously, he never lost sight of the importance of maintaining the Club's strong ties to the local community. We could think of no greater way to honor his contributions than to name this fellowship program for him."
The Economic Club is offering the Philip M. Dearborn Fellowship, a third $10,000 doctoral-level fellowship to Consortium students, honoring the late Philip Dearborn, a leading national authority on urban finance, intergovernmental finance, and regional economic development. This fellowship will be offered annually for proposed doctoral-level research dealing with issues of direct and specific relevance to the Greater Washington Metropolitan Area, including, without limitation, issues of economics, public and private finance, education, transportation, law enforcement, social welfare, housing, and regional and community development. It is expected that the research will rely to a significant extent on information and data derived from or relating to the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
Proposals and all supporting documents must accompany one another in the same envelope. For further instructions please contact Ms. Blessing with the Consortium of Universities at blessing@consortium.edu or The Economic Club at fellowship@economicclub.org. The final selection will be made by the Consortium of Universities and the Economic Club of Washington and their decisions shall be final. All candidates will be informed of the outcome of the selection process.
